The Month of May (Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea)

By Uncategorised

This May, Her Medical is proud to be taking part in Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, a national fundraising event supporting those impacted by cancer.

Each year, thousands of Australians come together during the month of May to host morning teas and community events to raise funds for the Cancer Council Australia. These funds support cancer research, prevention programs, and vital support services for individuals and families affected by cancer.

To support this important cause, Her Medical will be hosting a “Donate for a Cupcake” morning tea on 21 May 2026. Patients and visitors are invited to stop by, enjoy a cupcake, and make a donation (via QR CODE) to help support cancer research and services.

It’s a simple way to come together as a community and contribute to something that makes a real difference in people’s lives.

Date: 21 May 2026

Time: 8am-11am
Event: Donate for a Cupcake – Biggest Morning Tea

We look forward to seeing you there.

Labour Day – Women’s contribution

By Uncategorised

Labour Day isn’t just about a long weekend. It’s about the work that built everything around us.

And for women, that story runs deeper than most headlines ever capture.

It’s the paid work, yes but also the invisible work.
The care work.
The emotional load.
The late nights, early mornings, and the quiet mental lists that never quite switch off.

In healthcare, we see it every day.
Women showing up for everyone else, often putting themselves last.

So today is a reminder.
Your health is not the thing that fits in around everything else.
It is the foundation that everything else stands on.

If you’ve been putting something off, this is your nudge to book it.
Not when things slow down.
Not when it’s convenient.
Now.

Because strong systems need strong women and strong women need to be looked after too.

Labour Day. A day to recognise the work and to respect the woman doing it.Senior Older Retired Woman Grandmother Working On Laptop Writing And Working On Her Book

Easter Day

Easter Opening Hours at Her Medical

As the Easter long weekend approaches, we want to ensure our patients can plan ahead and access care when needed.

Her Medical will be closed over the Easter period to allow our team a short break.

Clinic closure dates:
Good Friday
Easter Saturday
Easter Sunday

Easter Monday

We will return to normal consulting hours from Tuesday 7 April.

Planning Ahead

The days leading into a long weekend are consistently busy, and appointments fill quickly. If you are due for a review, prescription, referral, or have any health concerns that should not be delayed, we strongly recommend booking ahead.

Please note that all online requests, including repeat prescriptions and referrals, will be turned off during the closure period. These services are not immediate and require clinical review, so we encourage you to organise anything needed well in advance.

If You Need Care While We’re Closed

If you require urgent medical attention during this period, please attend your nearest emergency department or call 000.

We appreciate your understanding. A well timed plan now avoids unnecessary stress later — for you and for us. We look forward to welcoming you back after the break.

We’re delighted to announce that Dr Natasha Feingold, General Practitioner at Her Medical, will be a featured speaker at The Embodied Woman Retreat, a transformative women’s health and wellbeing experience hosted by Dr Maria-Elena Lukeides.

Held at the luxurious Gaia Retreat & Spa in the Byron Bay hinterland, this three-day retreat brings together a handpicked group of experts across medicine, psychology, bodywork, and coaching to guide women through deep rest, reconnection, and re-education.

Dr Feingold is known for her warm, evidence-informed approach to general practice, with a strong interest in the mind-body connection, women’s health, and preventative care. At the retreat, she’ll be contributing to conversations around the complexities of the female body—hormones, stress, burnout, and the art of coming back to ourselves.

This is not your average wellness weekend. It’s a space for truth-telling, clarity, and community. A place where modern medicine meets ancient wisdom, and where women are invited to explore their health in a way that feels both grounded and expansive.

We’re proud to support Dr Feingold in this next chapter of her advocacy and contribution to women’s health, and we know attendees will benefit from her insight and care.

Understanding STIs: Symptoms and Testing

By Uncategorised

Sti

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a significant health concern that can affect anyone who is sexually active. Awareness and regular testing are key to managing and preventing the spread of STIs. In this blog, we’ll explore the common symptoms of STIs and the various methods used to test for them.

Common Symptoms of STIs

STIs can present a wide range of symptoms, and sometimes, individuals may not exhibit any symptoms at all. Here are some common signs to look out for:

  1. Genital Symptoms:
    • Unusual discharge from the penis or vagina
    • Pain or burning during urination
    • Itching, irritation, or sores in the genital area
    • Unexplained bleeding between periods or after sex (in women)
  2. General Symptoms:
    • Pain or swelling in the testicles
    • Pain in the lower abdomen
    • Fever or flu-like symptoms
    • Rash on the hands, feet, or trunk
  3. Oral Symptoms:
    • Sore throat
    • Mouth sores or blisters
  4. Anal Symptoms:
    • Discharge, itching, or pain in the rectal area
    • Bleeding from the rectum

It’s important to note that the presence of symptoms varies widely among individuals and depends on the specific STI. For instance, chlamydia and gonorrhoea often present mild or no symptoms, especially in women, which underscores the importance of regular screening.

How Are STIs Tested?

Testing for STIs is straightforward and varies depending on the type of infection. Here’s a rundown of the most common testing methods:

  1. Urine Tests:
    • Used to detect infections like chlamydia and gonorrhoea. You provide a urine sample, which is then analysed for the presence of bacteria.
  2. Blood Tests:
    • Used to diagnose HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis. A small blood sample is taken and tested for antibodies or the genetic material of the pathogens.
  3. Swab Tests:
    • A sample is taken from the affected area, such as the cervix, urethra, throat, or rectum. This method is commonly used for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and HPV.
  4. Physical Examination:
    • A healthcare provider may examine any sores, rashes, or warts to determine the cause and recommend appropriate testing.
  5. Pap Smear:
    • Primarily used to screen for cervical cancer and can also detect HPV. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected and examined.
  6. Rapid Tests:
    • Some STIs, like HIV, can be tested with rapid tests that provide results within 20-30 minutes using a small blood sample or oral fluid.

Why Regular Testing is Crucial

Regular STI testing is crucial for sexually active individuals, even if no symptoms are present. Early detection and treatment can prevent complications and reduce the spread of infections to others. It’s also important for pregnant women to get tested to prevent transmission to the baby.

Conclusion

Understanding the symptoms and testing methods for STIs empowers individuals to take charge of their sexual health. If you notice any unusual symptoms or are sexually active, make regular STI screenings a part of your healthcare routine. Remember, early detection is key to effective treatment and maintaining your overall health.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

By Uncategorised

In the intricate landscape of wellness, one area that has gained considerable attention in recent years is gut health. Deep within our digestive system lies a bustling community of microorganisms collectively known as the microbiome. This complex ecosystem plays a crucial role in not just digestion, but also in influencing various aspects of our overall health and well-being.

Understanding the microbiome is akin to unlocking a treasure trove of health benefits. Here’s a closer look at why it’s essential to delve into this fascinating realm:

Digestive Harmony: At the forefront of gut health lies digestion. The microbiome aids in breaking down food, extracting nutrients, and ensuring smooth passage through the digestive tract. A balanced microbiome fosters efficient digestion, reducing the likelihood of gastrointestinal issues such as bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea.

Immune Support: Surprisingly, a significant portion of our immune system resides in the gut. The microbiome acts as a sentinel, discerning between harmless and harmful substances. By maintaining a diverse and thriving microbial community, we bolster our immune defences, potentially reducing the risk of infections and autoimmune disorders.

Mood and Mental Well-being: The gut-brain connection is a burgeoning field of research, highlighting the intricate link between our digestive system and mental health. The microbiome produces neurotransmitters and interacts with the central nervous system, influencing mood, cognition, and stress responses. Nurturing a healthy microbiome may contribute to better mental well-being and a more balanced emotional state.

Weight Management: Emerging evidence suggests that the composition of the microbiome could impact weight regulation. Certain species of gut bacteria are associated with lean body mass, while others may contribute to weight gain and obesity. By fostering a diverse microbial ecosystem, individuals may potentially support their weight management efforts.

Nutrient Absorption: Beyond simply digesting food, the microbiome also aids in the absorption of essential nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals. A healthy gut microbiome ensures optimal nutrient uptake, which is vital for sustaining energy levels, supporting cellular function, and promoting overall vitality.

Inflammation Control: Chronic inflammation is a precursor to numerous health conditions, ranging from cardiovascular disease to inflammatory bowel disorders. The microbiome plays a pivotal role in modulating inflammation within the body. By promoting a balanced microbial environment, individuals may mitigate excessive inflammation and reduce the risk of inflammatory-related ailments.

Personalised Wellness: One of the most intriguing aspects of understanding the microbiome is its individuality. Each person harbours a unique microbial fingerprint shaped by factors such as diet, lifestyle, genetics, and environment.

In essence, delving into the realm of gut health and understanding the intricacies of the microbiome holds immense potential for enhancing overall health and well-being. By nurturing a diverse and balanced microbial community, individuals can pave the way towards a healthier, happier life—one microbe at a time.Title

By Uncategorised

February Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

In the heart of Southport, Her Medical is not just a clinic; it’s a beacon of support and compassion. With shared experience in the healthcare industry, our commitment to women’s health goes beyond routine check-ups. As the calendar turns to Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, Her Medical proudly joins the fight against this silent but deadly disease.

Ovarian cancer is often called the “silent killer” due to its subtle symptoms that can be easily overlooked. However, at Her Medical, we believe in the power of awareness and early detection. This month, our clinic is draped in teal, the official color of ovarian cancer awareness, to ignite conversations and spread knowledge about the risks, symptoms, and preventive measures.

Our dedicated team of healthcare professionals stands united in advocating for regular screenings and proactive healthcare. Ovarian cancer, when detected early, has a higher chance of successful treatment. Through informative pamphlets, interactive sessions, and engaging social media campaigns, we aim to empower women with knowledge that could be a lifesaver.

At Her Medical, we understand that a supportive community plays a pivotal role in battling any health challenge. Therefore, we encourage our patients, staff, and the broader Southport community to come together in solidarity. By fostering a sense of community, we hope to provide emotional support to those affected by ovarian cancer and their loved ones.

As part of our commitment to raising awareness, Her Medical will host educational events throughout the month. These events will cover various aspects of ovarian cancer, from risk factors to the latest advancements in treatment. We believe that knowledge is a powerful tool, and by equipping our community with the right information, we contribute to the collective effort to reduce the impact of ovarian cancer.

To further demonstrate our dedication, Her Medical will donate a percentage of this month’s proceeds to ovarian cancer research organizations. By contributing to ongoing research, we aim to support the development of new treatments and, ultimately, find a cure for this formidable disease.

We we take pride in our connection to the community and the beautiful surroundings. As we embrace Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, we do so with a commitment to the wellbeing of every woman in our care and beyond. Together, let’s turn the tide against ovarian cancer, ensuring a brighter and healthier future for all.
